Fusion IP confirms university deal

University commercialisation firm Fusion IP has confirmed it is investing £75,000 in the developers of an advanced ultrasound training tool.
The Sheffield-based firm said the deal would give it ownership of 36.7% of Cardiff University spin-out Medaphor.
Finance Wales has also invested £75,000 in Medaphor through a recent fund-raising initiative.
Medaphor is developing ScanTrainer - a virtual reality ultrasound training device which fuses high quality ultrasound images with world-class computer-based feedback and training.
Using the product, which can be applied to various other therapeutic areas, is expected to remove the current training problems of limited equipment, trainers and volunteers.
Medaphor will be able to complete developing the ScanTrainer prototype using Fusion's funds and begin marketing it following a product launch planned for the first half of 2010.
Chief executive of Fusion IP, David Baynes, said: "The innovative ScanTrainer will initially be targeted for the obstetrics and gynaecology ultrasound training market, the largest and most pressing ultrasound market where current training needs are unmet.
"Due to NHS requirements to deliver more qualified diagnostic imaging professionals, we believe that the ScanTrainer is strongly positioned for the postgraduate and continuous professional development segments."
