University lets government know its business

Members of a Yorkshire university have called on the government to do more to grow the letting sector.
Academics at the University of York produced a review entitled the Private Rented Sector: Its Contribution and Potential, which looked into a wide range of topics in the industry, such as institutional investment in renting and poor property condition.
Dr Julie Rugg, one of the contributors to the review, explained: "We want to see a new culture of renting, where landlords view themselves very clearly as hands-on business people, not hands-off investors.
"Too many myths are attached to renting."
The review called for plans to aid dependable, part-time landlords to enhance their portfolios.
It claimed that entering into the full-time letting business would encourage low-key landlords to invest in professional development.
Dr Rugg and David Rhodes, who also worked on the project, are part of the University of York's Centre for Housing Policy that was formed in 1990 with the support of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.
It claims to be "one of the leading housing research centres in Europe".
